British Rowing Championships

The British Junior and Senior Rowing Championships took place earlier from the 18th – 21st July and our students Isabella, Luna, Siena and Sofia all took part with Calpe Rowing Club. This was the largest the competition has been with over 3000 rowers participating.

The competition began on the Friday where both Siena and Sofia took part in their first races. Sofia raced with her partner who she has been training with all season. They competed in the J16 pair category, competing against fifteen other competitors unfortunately they did not make the A final, but they pushed hard to win the B final which placed them 8th overall in that category.

Siena competed in the Open Senior Women’s Single Scull. There were over r40 competitors, many of which have been previously part of team GB and were aged from 24-37 years old with Siena being the youngest in this category. She placed 16th overall and fourth in her final, missing 3rd place after being just1 second off an athlete from last year’s Team GB.

Saturday saw Isabella, Siena and Sofia all compete. Sofia competed with her crew in the J18 category. They placed third in the timed trial and then went on to win a silver medal in the final! Isabella competed in a double scull in the J16 category, where they finished with an excellent time. Siena raced J18 women's single scull which was the second largest category of entries for the entire championships with over 88 athletes competing! Siena placed 18th in the timed trial missing out from the A final by just 3 seconds. She went on to place 4th in her final finishing only 2 seconds off from third!

Luna competed on the final day on the championships in the J14 Single Scull. She placed 5th overall, with just 3 seconds between her and 4th place! This meant she could compete in the semi-final, where she placed 3rd, qualifying her to participate in the final. Lunas race was the last one for Calpe of the entire competition and she smashed it placing 6th overall in that category against 24 other girls.

There was some incredibly tough competition throughout the championships, but they all worked incredibly hard, staying motivated throughout. It was an incredible experience for them to take part, and we cannot wait to see how they all do next season!
