Prior Park School are delighted to announce a partnership with local Gibraltar registered charity, RifCom (The Rif Community Foundation), as part of their Community Outreach Program overseas.
The charity was founded by a group of like-minded individuals, from Gibraltar and Spain in 2008, after witnessing the poverty existing in the Moroccan Rif Mountains. Together they decided to reach out and help their neighboring communities and have since carried out numerous life enhancing projects in partnership with the local communities, including building a school and pre-school for local children, as well as establishing a sewing co-operative for women, so they can earn money from their sales.
Prior Park’s Chemistry teacher, Dr Lnenicek-Allen joined the group on their monthly visits to the Chefchaouen region last month, to see what the charity has achieved so far. Many of the schools in the area are closed or severely limited due to lack of maintenance and/or facilities, in some cases water is diverted from the schools to surrounding fields for agriculture or the classrooms are literally falling down, meaning the children cannot get even a basic primary education. Getting a secondary education becomes an almost impossible challenge, especially for rural girls.
Money raised by Prior Park students during various charity events has been used to purchase stationery for the soon to be open crèche, to keep young children entertained whilst the women can work on their sewing project. The school is planning to engage students further by donating old school and sports shoes as well as extra material for the sewing project.
In future, the student’s engagement could be extended to visiting the area and work on projects there.
